What is the scariest horror movie you’ve ever seen? Ours has a very common plot. Only imagine, legacy systems sit at the center of a company’s operations for years, slowly poisoning business and technical processes. Based on a true story, though.

Jokes apart, legacy systems may work for your company now, but as technology (and your competitors) are advancing, outdated systems can’t keep up. They become too difficult to maintain, too expensive to scale, or too risky to change. At that point, companies start looking for legacy modernization service providers. The challenge is not finding vendors. There are thousands of software development firms, cloud consultancies, and IT service providers claiming they can modernize old systems. The real challenge is finding a partner that understands both the technology and the business risk behind the project.

So before your legacy system turns into your personal nightmare, let’s outline the most common venues to find a reliable partner for legacy system modernization.

    Old Good Google Search

Google is still one of the most practical starting points, especially when you know what kind of modernization you need. A broad search like “legacy software modernization company” will bring up hundreds of results (ratings and company websites), but it may not give you the most relevant providers. A more specific search usually works better. Search based on the legacy stack your software runs on (Cobol to Java modernization services) or the goal you want to achieve (migrate legacy systems to the Cloud).

The downside is that search results are not the same as quality assurance. A company can rank well because of marketing, not because it has deep modernization experience. Google should help you build an initial list, not make the final decision.

    Cloud Partner Directories

If your legacy system modernization involves moving to the cloud, look for certified partners directly through the technology vendors (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure). They undergo regular, rigorous qualification audits.

AWS Partner Network (APN): Look for companies with official Migration or Mainframe Modernization competencies. This ensures that the provider’s engineers know how to seamlessly migrate outdated infrastructure to Amazon servers.

Microsoft Partner Finder: Find partners specializing in Cloud Infrastructure and Azure Migration. This is the ideal option if your current system is built on older Microsoft technologies (such as early versions of .NET or SQL Server).

Google Cloud Partner Directory: Choose certified agencies with Application Development or Infrastructure distinctions to build modern microservice architectures.

    B2B Review Platforms

B2B review platforms are specialized third-party websites that collect and display feedback, ratings, and testimonials about business-to-business service providers. They originated as independent resources for decision-making and can help you compare providers based on client feedback, project size, location, industry focus, and service specialization. Some of the most notable examples of b2b review platforms are Recode, Clutch, and G2.

These platforms are not perfect, but they can help you notice patterns during the research stage. If several clients mention strong communication, accurate estimates, good documentation, and careful handling of complex legacy systems, that is a positive signal.

    Networking and Referrals

Look for referrals from peer companies in your industry that have recently gone through migration. Private connections often prove far more valuable than a simple Google search, as they provide you with real, unfiltered insights from other companies. Don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations directly from CTOs or architects at related companies that have already successfully upgraded their software, because it is in a personal conversation that they can openly talk about hidden pitfalls, the actual qualifications of a specific contractor’s engineers, and the hidden challenges that are never mentioned in official press releases.

To summarize, the decision to migrate legacy software to a modern stack is already an important step, but this is only the first part. The fun begins when you look for a reliable partner to complete the migration. Google, cloud partner directories, B2B review platforms like Recode, and referrals can all help you build a strong shortlist, but none of them should replace proper evaluation. After all, legacy modernization should not feel like surviving a horror movie. With the right partner, you can avoid unexpected plot twists and have a happy ending.
