Some of the best gigs in a city never appear in a search for a major tour. Smaller clubs, theatres and independent venues announce shows constantly, often featuring artists who are just starting to draw bigger audiences.

    Start With One Concert

A familiar artist can still be a useful starting point, especially when you want to see what else is happening around the same dates. Once you have a name in mind, the concert tickets page on Fanatix lets you browse upcoming events and narrow them by performer, country, city, venue and date. From there, the venue and supporting artists can lead to concerts you would probably never have searched for directly.

Suppose an artist you know is playing a 1,500-capacity theatre rather than an arena. Check that theatre’s full calendar before moving on. Acts booked by the same venue often overlap in audience, genre or touring level, so one interesting date can quickly produce several others.

    Check Venue Calendars

Searching by venue works particularly well for discovering local music. Arenas cover the largest tours, but theatres, clubs, arts centres and grassroots rooms usually have denser calendars and a wider mix of artists.

Start with three or four nearby venues and look through an entire month instead of searching a single evening. A Thursday club show or Sunday theatre concert may feature an artist who receives little advertising outside the local scene.

Venue size also changes the experience. A developing band in a few-hundred-capacity room can feel very different from seeing the same act several years later in an arena, especially when the audience already knows the songs but the production remains relatively simple.

    Look at the Full Lineup

Support acts and genre nights can reveal artists you would not normally search for. If you like the headliner, check the opener’s upcoming dates and look at other events built around a similar sound. A simple discovery routine can look like this:

    • Check the monthly calendars of nearby arenas, theatres and independent clubs.
    • Open the full lineup instead of stopping at the headline act.
    • Search the support artist and see where else they are playing.
    • Look for recurring indie, jazz, metal, electronic or songwriter nights in the same venue.

This approach works best when repeated occasionally rather than only when a famous artist announces a tour. Venue calendars change throughout the year, and smaller events can appear much closer to the performance date.

It also helps build a better picture of your local scene. After a few searches, certain promoters, rooms and recurring nights become familiar, making future concert discovery much quicker.

    Why Small Venues Matter

Grassroots venues are part of the touring network that allows artists to build an audience city by city. The scale of that network can directly determine whether people outside major centres regularly get professional live music.

The Music Venue Trust Annual Report 2025 reported that more than 175 UK towns and cities no longer had reliable access to national touring artists. The affected areas represented about 35 million people, illustrating how strongly concert access depends on a functioning local venue circuit.

Independent live entertainment also has a large economic footprint. NIVA’s State of Live study found that independent venues, festivals and promoters contributed $86.2 billion to U.S. GDP in 2024 and generated $153.1 billion in total economic output.

    Try a Weekday Gig

Friday and Saturday naturally attract attention, but limiting a search to weekends removes a large part of many venue calendars. Touring schedules are built around routes between cities, so an excellent show may land locally on a Tuesday simply because that date fits the tour.

Weekday concerts can also make spontaneous plans easier. Check what is happening after work, listen to two or three tracks from an unfamiliar act, and decide whether the venue and music sound worth an evening out.

    Find the Next Show

After finding one good concert, keep following the connections around it. Check the support act, venue calendar, promoter, genre night and nearby tour dates, then save the names that catch your attention.

That habit changes concert discovery completely. Instead of waiting for an artist you already know to announce a show, you start noticing the local stages where your next favourite act may already be playing.
