Many people will experience some back pain in their lives. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, it was recently found that more than 600 million people will be affected by low back pain worldwide. There are numerous reasons for this type of pain, which means there are different ways to avoid such experiences.

Some individuals will even recover from back and spine issues on their own, but this might not work for you. In fact, you might even have a healthy spine at the moment and wish to keep that for as long as possible. Either way, you will benefit from the three tips mentioned below.

    Focus on Strength and Stretching

A spine can be more susceptible to injuries when the muscles are imbalanced or tight, and this can be avoided by building strength and stretching. Strong muscles will provide essential stability to an individual’s back by supporting the vertebrae, discs, ligaments, and facet joints of the spine, which is why you should prioritize strength. The strengthening exercises you practice should focus on your core and back, such as crunches and planks, but you could begin weightlifting, too.

As well as improving strength, you will need to increase the flexibility and range of motion of the muscles and tissues around the spine. Having better mobility will help prevent stiffness and maintain proper spine alignment. There are numerous stretching exercises that can be beneficial for spine health, such as the cat-cow stretch and the seated forward bend. You might also consider Pilates or yoga, both of which incorporate stretches to improve spinal flexibility.

    Seek Help from a Professional

Although most people will only go to a health professional after becoming injured, there are other times when you could benefit from this. You might experience changes in spine alignment or shape, difficulty moving, numbness or tingling in the limbs, or persistent pain. Yet, some issues, like headaches and migraines, can also be related to your spine health. If – and/or when – you begin noticing these issues, it is important to seek assistance quickly.

Making an appointment with your general practitioner (GP) is your first step if you want professional help. This individual can refer you to a specialist, like a chiropractor. A chiropractor can treat the patient’s entire musculoskeletal system through various methods. The chiropractic care at Broadmead Physiotherapy, for example, can do this by encouraging active lifestyles, reducing pain, and restoring mobility.

    Take Care with Heavy Lifting

With many back problems caused by lifting heavy items improperly, this should be avoided at all costs. You must learn how to lift and carry heavy items correctly to ensure your spine does not experience too much strain. If you do not, then you could be at risk of herniated discs, sprains, strains, and other serious injuries.

To lift weighty objects correctly, you will need to maintain proper posture with correct back alignment and engaged core muscles. It is best to use your legs to lift by bending at the knees, not at the waist. Your back should be kept straight throughout the lift and keep the item as close to your body as you can. If you can, it is also advised to get help if the object is too heavy or awkward to lift by yourself.

To conclude, maintaining a healthy spine and preventing injuries is important to ensure your day-to-day life is not negatively impacted. To do this, you must use the three tips outlined in this post.
