The Archipel YouTube channel (via Destructoid) published a new video of their documentary series and was focused on Toshihiro Nagoshi, creator of the Yakuza series and current SEGA producer. In the video, the creative talked about the development of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and confessed how the idea of ​​making an RPG of the series began as an April Fool’s Day joke.

Nagoshi recalls that in April 2019 they shared a video that took turn-based fighting to Yakuza, something unusual. While many found it to be an April Fool’s Day joke, many thought this would be the series’ new title, taking into account the considerable progress seen in the video. However, the truth is that Yakuza: Like a Dragon began its development as an action game and it was not until the good reception of the prank video that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio adopted turn-based RPG mechanics, less than 1 year after its original premiere.

“At first, we talked jokingly about making an RPG (…) In fact, it was something we only did for April Fools’ Day. It was still an action game at the time. From there, the video was received positively, we completely changed direction. We started making it an RPG, ”Nagoshi commented.

Although the change occurred at an advanced stage of development, Ryu Ga Gotoku did not take it negatively, but it is a characteristic of the studio to rush in their projects, according to Nagoshi, and this news motivated creatives to contribute ideas. fresh.

“Nobody said it was too late to make the switch to an RPG, that it was impossible or that it would not satisfy the players. It was more like coming up with ideas to make it happen. In my experience, when you have to stop brainstorming because there are so many ideas flowing, you are going in the right direction, ”Nagoshi said.
