with a new variant, without oxygen for patients and an increase in deaths

It is the third type of variation of COVID-19, after those of the United Kingdom and South Africa. The state of Amazonas suffers a crisis of oxygen reserves.

Brazil is in a worrying spiral against COVID-19. It was known that there is a variant of the disease, different from that of the United Kingdom and South Africa.

All this in the Latin American country with the highest number of deaths from the virus. In addition, cities such as Manaus have a collapse in oxygen reserves for patients.

Where did they find the COVID-19 variant?

According to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, the largest medical research center in Latin America, the new variant was found in the state of Amazonas.

According to the institution, four Japanese travelers visited the Amazon region. From there the mutation occurred. « It is a recent phenomenon, probably occurring between December 2020 and January 2021, » says Fiocruz.

« It may be representative of a potentially emerging virus in Brazil. »

According to Fiocruz, « the emergence of new variants of SARS-CoV-2 that harbor new mutations in the peak protein, which can impact viral fitness and transmissibility, has been a matter of great concern. »

The issue with variants is not that it makes the disease more lethal than it is, but that it accelerates transmission.

The oxygen crisis for patients in Brazil

Brazil is the country with the highest number of deaths in Latin America. Only until this Friday, 207 thousand people have died from the disease, out of 8.32 million cases.

Cities like Manaus ran out of oxygen reserves for COVID-19 patients. The authorities have had to send those affected to other regions.

Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello spoke about « collapse » in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state. He did it in a virtual conference with President Jair Bolsonaro, this Thursday.

« I would say yes, there is a collapse in medical care in Manaus. The line to get a hospital bed has grown a lot, today we have about 480 people waiting. »

« And the reality is that there is a lower supply of oxygen, not an interruption, but a lower supply, » stressed the health authority.
