It is summer and during this period, it is not uncommon to punctuate a lazy day at the beach or by the swimming pool with a chilled aperitif. While some opt for fruit juices, detox cocktails or sodas, others are tempted by alcoholic drinks.
Among the most consumed aperitifs in this context, we find wine and beer. However, we know it: alcohol is not without consequences on health… nor on the line! But which of her two drinks has the greatest impact on weight?
Wine and beer: empty calories
A glass of wine usually contains 12 cl of drink and contains about 100 kcal. Beer, on the other hand, is generally drunk in two formats: in half, which corresponds to 25 cl, or in pint, or 50 cl. The pint has also become the basic unit. Half a beer at 3 ° alcohol contains 108 kcal, while a pint contains 216.
Problem: the calories contained in these alcoholic drinks are said to be “empty”, that is to say that they have no nutritional value and that the energy supplied by these calories is not used by the body. Finally, the ethanol molecule contained in alcohol is transformed into glucose, in other words into sugar, then into triglycerides, in other words into fats.
Result? The more alcohol consumed, the more empty calories are stored. It also affects the liver, which can only neutralize a small amount of alcohol. Heavy alcohol consumption can therefore have an impact on the figure and on health, even if it depends on the metabolism of each individual.
Monitor the amount consumed and frequency
What gives the caloric aspect of a drink is the degree of alcohol. The higher it is, the more caloric the drink. Wine is therefore more caloric than beer, but since a glass of wine contains 12 cl and beer contains 25 to 50, beer, depending on its degree of alcohol, can become more caloric.
Finally, when we consume alcohol, it is not the choice of drink that promotes weight gain, but the amount consumed and the frequency. It is thus possible to monitor your figure while drinking alcohol, if this consumption is limited to a few drinks per week. Drinking more regularly and in larger quantities promotes the storage of fat.
If the amount of alcohol consumed and the frequency have more of an impact on weight gain than the choice of drink, beer has a particularity: it tends to increase gastric volume because of the gas it contains, which can have consequences on the line.
Wine and beer: how to limit the impact of these drinks on the line?
To consume alcohol while taking care of your health and your figure, it is therefore advisable to:
limit the quantity and frequency of consumption; drink a large glass of water before consuming alcohol and between each glass, as this makes it possible to limit the sensation of thirst and therefore the quantities consumed; avoid sweet white wine, which is sweeter than others; avoid cocktails such as Monaco, which contains beer, lemonade and grenadine syrup, or kir, which contains crème de cassis and white wine, as this amounts to add sugar and calories.
