The Chevrolet Corvette C8, the eighth generation of the American icon, resorts for the first time in its history to a rear mid-engine configuration. Equipped with an atmospheric V8 with up to 495 horses, it has been presented in its Stingray version, and announces an acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers / hour in 3 seconds. Deliveries have already started in the United States, but arrival in Europe will be delayed until the second half of 2021.

He Chevrolet corvette It was presented in 1953 as a convertible sports model with a six-cylinder in-line engine and longitudinal front arrangement, but very soon – in 1955 – it resorted to the V8 block that has accompanied it to this day. After hundreds of rumors, spy photos, marketing actions and a long wait, the new generation of the Corvette Stingray, mid-engine, that equips a new 495 horsepower V8 LT2 engine.

It should be noted that it is not the first time that the Corvette resorts to a mechanical configuration with the engine behind the passenger compartment, as we explain in this article that reviews its precedents, but it is the first time that the American model has been marketed with this architecture.

Apart from its mechanical aspects, although clearly conditioned by them, the design of the new Corvette Stingray presents lines that vaguely reminiscent of its predecessorbut modifies its proportions to accommodate the V8 block at the rear, while the front hood is shorter and sloped than usual on the American model. They maintain the tension lines on the doors, hood, roof and shoulders, as well as the unique shape of their taillights.

Inside we find a completely renewed design in which the driving position envelops the user and technology is ubiquitous, with digital instrumentation and a nearly vertical screen next to the steering wheel. The quality of the finishes has taken a step forward with surfaces completely upholstered in leather and without the presence of the usual plastics.


In the mechanical section, the new naturally aspirated V8 LT2 engine it is, in fact, an evolution of the previous 6.2-liter block, the LT1, present in the Corvette C7. It delivers 490 horses with a torque of 630 Newton meters. With the Performance Pack Z51, it has 495 horses and a torque of 637 Newton meters.

Accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers / hour in 3 seconds, which is a gain of 0.7 seconds. With the Z51 pack, it stands at 2.9 seconds. The Z51 package also features a more effective exhaust, as well as exclusive brakes and an even firmer suspension.

It is precisely in the braking system where we find one of the main peculiarities of the new Chevrolet corvette stingray. It has three different operating modes with which the driver has the possibility to adapt the touch and response of the pedal responsible for stopping the vehicle. The first of them is the Tour, prepared for the day to day and thus offer a more comfortable response. The second, called Sport, offers a more aggressive feel, while the third, baptized as Track, is similar to that of a racing car with a very hard touch in the first moment that is ideal to carry out the demanding braking that can require a circuit.

Later – never before 2021 – the Chevrolet corvette stingray It will feature a more powerful engine in the style of the Corvette C7 Z06. Everything indicates that this new unit will be a V8 biturbo – Automobile Magazine points to Cadillac’s 4.2-liter V8 as a base – capable of delivering a power of about 800 horses. This will also mean that the Corvette has to equip some aerodynamic additions and, probably, larger surface tires that require redesigning the wheel arches.


From the most basic finish the Chevrolet corvette stingray It has a fairly complete equipment that includes, among others, elements such as the rear view camera, the rear parking assistant or the traction and stability controls. It also presents a curiosity that allows even the youngest drivers to get behind the wheel of this vehicle without danger. Its about Teen Driver Mode, whose translation would be something like the ‘teenage driver mode’. Already present in other models of the brand, it is associated with a specific driver through its key to, among other things, prevent key driving aids from being disconnected, activate a maximum speed alarm or limit the volume maximum sound equipment, something that the General Motors firm considers ideal for the newest to gradually learn what it means to tame a vehicle with these characteristics.

The Corvette C8 Stingray is equipped as standard with a sound system consisting of 10 Bose speakers, expandable to 14 as an option. According to Bose, it is the most powerful sound system that has ever been prepared for a sports car. Part of the customization takes into account the fact that it is a convertible vehicle. The biggest challenge is isolating the occupants from the roar of the V8 engine. The manufacturer claims to have succeeded.


The starting price of the new Chevrolet corvette stingray It is 59,995 dollars, which at the current exchange rate is just over 54,000 euros. This figure corresponds to the 1LT finish. Above is the 2LT, which starts at $ 67,295 –60,700 euros–, while the 3LT, the top of the range for now, costs a minimum of $ 71,945 –64,900 euros–. In addition, the prices of the Z51 packages –5,000 dollars, 4,500 euros– and Engine Appearence Package, with carbon details and LED lights for the engine compartment –1,195 dollars, 1,078 euros– have been announced.

The Corvette Stingray began production in February. The first units were delivered in March 2020, although the coronavirus pandemic caused delays.

In June 2020, it is announced that the new Corvette will hit European dealerships in the second half of 2021 starting at € 102,500. It will debut first in the UK and then on the mainland. It will arrive in the so-called ‘Launch Edition’, which includes the Performance Z51 pack.
