Why is Airbnb canceling reservations in the Washington, DC area?

Airbnb announced that it will block and cancel all reservations in the Washington, DC area, during the next week, when the presidential inauguration in the United States will take place.

The decision was made in response to requests from various local, state and federal officials that people not travel to the capital. It comes two days after the company said it was reviewing reservations in the area prior to the inauguration and would ban guests associated with extremist groups or violent political activities.

The San Francisco-based company said guests whose reservations were canceled will receive a full refund.

It will also reimburse the hosts for the money they would have earned from those canceled reservations. He also said that reservations at HotelTonight, an Airbnb service that handles discounted reservations at premium hotels, will also be canceled.

“We continue to work to ensure that members of hate groups are not part of the Airbnb community,” the company said in a blog.

Airbnb said it learned from the press and law enforcement sources of the names of individuals who were confirmed responsible for criminal activity on Capitol Hill a week ago.

He investigated whether those individuals have Airbnb accounts. He says that as a result he has identified numerous individuals associated with known extremist groups or involved in criminal activity on Capitol Hill. He said they were banned from the Airbnb platform.

Airbnb has had a policy of banning guests with confirmed ties to hate groups since 2017, when it blocked guests heading to a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The company said it will not give political donations to Republicans who voted against the certification of the presidential election results, joining Marriott, AT&T and others in that position.

Airbnb’s political action committee donated $ 866,519 to candidates and parties in the 2020 election cycle, according to the Open Secrets organization, which monitors campaign donations.

President-elect Joe Biden was the biggest recipient of Airbnb donations.
