Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal became a trend in Mexico, after an investigation showed that the Ambulante civil association, founded by both, would have received millions of pesos during the six-year terms of Felipe Calderón and Enrique Peña Nieto under the concept of “donations ”.
According to the investigation published this morning by the journalist Ricardo Sevilla in the medium Regeneración, the association would have been highly benefited in both six-year terms, receiving more than 160 million pesos.
“When reviewing the reports of Authorized Grantees issued annually by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SCHP), it can be seen that from 2009 to 2018, this organization received more than 160 million pesos from donations”, the available investigation begins online.
Subsequently, the letter offered its readers a breakdown of the money that the organization that is dedicated to “supporting and disseminating documentary cinema as a tool for cultural and social transformation” allegedly received, according to its website.
According to the investigation, Ambulante would have received more than 35 million pesos over the three years of Felipe Calderón’s administration, from 2009 to 2012 and 133 million during the Peña Nieto administration.
Likewise, according to the documents to which the media had access, during the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the organization received 10 million pesos. In addition, the work also recovered the testimony of some former Ambulante workers who had been dismissed unjustifiably.
The investigation quickly went viral on social networks, where some users replicated the work done by the journalist Ricardo Sevilla and reacted to the actions allegedly carried out by the festival that is a benchmark for cinema in Mexico City and at the national level.
“There the vengeful cuatroté is looking for you, Diego… you are going to have to find a lawyer”, “Hello, Elena Fortes, Gael García, Diego Luna… they disgust us”, “No wonder all the ‘directors’ of Ambulante always boasted in networks his hatred of Cannes, Belí, etc. NGO FIFÍ “,” Pair of parasites, hypocrites, “wrote some users from their Twitter accounts.
According to its website, the Ambulante organization was founded in Mexico in 2005 by Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna and Elena Fortes. It is currently directed by Paulina Suárez and its main objective is to promote documentary cinema in different parts of the Mexican Republic.
“The organization takes documentary cinema to places with little exhibition and training offer in this genre, in order to promote plural dialogue and reflection on relevant issues,” he stated at the beginning of the digital site.
At the moment, neither Diego Luna nor Gael García, as well as Elena Fortes nor Paulina Suárez have issued any comment on the investigation. Neither has the organization issued any statement in this regard. However, this year it will celebrate the sixteenth edition of its documentary tour.
“The Tour will travel to five states of the republic between November 3 and December 5, 2021 with an offer of short films and documentary feature films that address topics such as climate justice, defense of the territory, the link between society and the technology and the work of human rights defenders, among others ”, reads the official announcement of the festival.
