What is the mobility pyramid

The Mobility Pyramid will allow you, among other things, to make better transport decisions and to know where you are according to the hierarchies indicated therein.

According to Qualitas, this concept is a graphic reference on the road preference of all the transport concepts that circulate on the roads. It is made up of five steps and in each of them the hierarchy that each element has with respect to the others is applied, both in terms of the right of way, as well as in terms of sustainability and investment policies in public works.

Follow a descending order. At the top is the least aggressive means of transport with the environment and the one that has the absolute preference of passage and government investment; on the second rung is the means of transport that has priority over the other three, but not over the one at the top, and so on.

The pedestrian occupies the top of the Pyramid of Mobility. They are followed, in descending order: 2) cyclists; 3) users of the public passenger transport service; 4) providers of cargo transportation and merchandise distribution services; and 5) users of private automotive transportation.

It is the most vulnerable user, but it is also the most common. Pedestrians occupy the top of the pyramid as users of public roads because they make up the group most exposed to road hazards, such as run over or assaults. Walking is recommended if the distance that separates you from your destination is less than 3 kilometers.

Walking and cycling are the only healthy means of transportation. However, users of both levels make up the most vulnerable group in the road space. Riding a bicycle is the most efficient mobility option for journeys shorter than 5 km and greater than 3 km that do not require extraordinary physical effort.

Public transport.

This is the first step with motorized vehicles and, therefore, its environmental impact is significant. Public transport has the advantage of considerably reducing polluting emissions since it is shared by several people. In addition, its use implies a decrease in the vehicle fleet, which results in a reduction in travel times.

Cargo trucks.

They are in this step is very important because it directly impacts the economic activities of a country. In other words, it is essential that cargo trucks circulate through the city only at the times and on the indicated routes, that they do not transport prohibited materials, that the weight of their cargo does not exceed the threshold of their maximum capacity, etc.

Private cars.

Both cars and motorcycles are a highly polluting and expensive method of transportation. This step requires good signage for its distribution, since even being the one with the lowest priority it tends to be the one with the highest growth.
