Netflix’s strong performance of “Ozark” helped the streaming service achieve a record 160 nominations, beating the perennial HBO leader, who received 107.

Amazon’s comedy « The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel » ranked second with the most nominations, 20, followed by « Ozark, » with 18.

« This year, we also witnessed one of the largest social justice fights in history. And it is our duty to use this medium for change, » said Frank Scherma, President and CEO of the Television Academy, at beginning of presentation.

Kerry Washington received four mentions in a variety of sections, including Best Actress for « Little Fires Everywhere » and for her production company’s work on this limited series and other shows.

The diversity was especially noticeable in the comedy categories after being almost absent last year.

The dismissal was less affectionate for other shows that came to an end, such as « Modern Family, » « Homeland, » and « Silicon Valley. »

But the late Fred Willard received a mention for his guest appearance on « Modern Family. » Director Lynn Shelton also received a posthumous nomination for the limited series “Little Fires Everywhere”.

« I am incredibly grateful that the Television Academy has decided to honor Lynn with this much-deserved nomination, » said Washington. « I know she is celebrating in the hereafter. »

The eight nominations for « Unorthodox, » a limited series about an unsatisfied Orthodox Jew, may reflect that the time at home for the quarantine led Emmy voters to watch series they would have otherwise overlooked, said Daniel Fienberg, the main TV critic for The Hollywood Reporter.

A very different pop culture phenomenon would also have benefited.

« A series like‘ Tiger King ’, for example, that received a handful of nominations, is not really that wonderful, but it was absolutely the junk food that people craved at first quarantine, » Feinberg said.

Along with Jones, they presented the nominees Laverne Cox (« Orange is the New Black »), Josh Gad (« Frozen ») and Tatiana Maslany (« Orphan Black »).

Among those honored for roles that collided with current events, Brad Pitt was nominated for his guest role on « Saturday Night Live », where he played Dr. Anthony Fauci.
