Slovakian Petra Vlhova edged American Mikaela Shiffrin by 15 hundredths in the first round of Levi’s slalom, the first of the season. The French Nastasia Noens, for her return from injury, should qualify for the second round.
A month after the opening giant slalom in Sölden, the 2020-21 Ski World Cup really takes off this weekend during the traditional slaloms in Levi, Finland. A World Cup that hopes to take place as normal as possible in this pandemic period, even if nothing says that all the races can take place, and that the American and Canadian stages have already been canceled. Anyway, Petra Vlhova, the winner of the small globe of the slalom last season, started the 2020-21 year well, setting the best time in the first round. Started with bib 5, she was 15 hundredths ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin, who was competing in her first race since January 26, following the death of his father in early February, then the premature end of the season. A priori, victory should be played between these two specialists in the discipline. On the provisional podium, we find the Austrian Katharina Liensberger, who is 52 hundredths behind the Slovak. The top ten in the standings stand in 1 ″ 36, and we find in particular Marta Bassino, the winner of the Sölden giant and therefore leader of the World Cup, in ninth place.
Noens breaks the series
On the French side, they were two in contention, with the hope of erasing the terrible record of last season, which did not see any tricolor qualify for the second round. Fortunately, Nastasia Noens stopped this series. Absent all last season due to a broken tibia, the 32-year-old slalom rider qualified for the second run, finishing 26th just over two seconds behind Vlhova. She will therefore have almost perfect snow in the second heat (which will start at 1:15 pm), where she will start fifth. It is over, however, for Josephine Forni, who finished at 3 ″ 65.
