Dutch driver Max Verstappen set the fastest time in the second free practice session of the Styrian Grand Prix, demonstrating the progress Red Bull Racing is making for this second weekend at home.
With an ambient temperature of 31 ºC and 50 ºC on the track, the pilots dedicated themselves to testing the compounds for the race, although this session took on a special value since tomorrow the weather conditions could be adverse, to the point of not carrying out the classification. In case this happens, the times established in this training are those that are taken into account for the starting grid of the race next Sunday.
With a record of 1: 03.660, Max Verstappen beat Valtteri Bottas, winner of the last Austrian Grand Prix, by just 0.043s. After them, the speedy Racing Point of Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll finished. Both were the surprise of the day, especially the Mexican who was the fastest in the morning training.
After the ‘Mercedes Rosa’ ended the Spanish Carlos Sainz of McLaren, the British Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and the Thai Alexander Albon of Red Bull, who did not have a successful day when leaving the track on several occasions.
The eighth time was in the hands of Lando Norris of McLaren. Next Sunday he will have to comply with a three-position sanction on the starting grid of the race, because he advanced under the yellow flag during the first free practice session.
The top 10 were closed by the Monegasque Charles Leclerc from Ferrari and the French Esteban Ocon from Renault. Speaking of their teammates, they did not have a good session. In the case of the German Sebastian Vettel, he finished in the sixteenth position and complained a lot about the front of the car. Meanwhile the Australian Daniel Ricciardo, had a strong collision as soon as the session started. He got out of his car with a little limp, but after the reviews by the FIA doctors, he was discharged.
Troubling performance of the Haas team, occupying the last places of the session with Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean. In the morning the Danish pilot had battery problems.
Tomorrow at 11:00 am Spielberg will start the third and last session of free tests and later at 11:00 am the classification of the Styrian Grand Prix with LIVE broadcast of F1Latam.com.
