Verstappen knew what would happen

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen starred in the second major incident of their particular duel for the 2021 Formula 1 title this Sunday at the Monza Italian GP.

Both arrived evenly matched to the first chicane on lap 26, after Mercedes’ Englishman came out of the pits after switching to the media. Hamilton he cornered the Dutchman to the outside of the first vertex; it did not loosen and jumped over the banana at the second vertex, landing with its right rear wheel and the ground of the RB16B about him Halo of the Mercedes.

In fact, the wheel came to touch the helmet of the seven-time world champion, who came out on his own feet moments later, after initially trying to reverse after the Red Bull landed on the nose.

“Yes, I am a little sore in the neck to be honest, since it landed on my head. But I’ll be fine. I really appreciate having the Halo, because otherwise I would be in a worse position today”, were the first words of Hamilton after getting off the car.

“From what I remember, I was racing as hard as I could, and eventually I passed Lando. I was leading, or they told me I was leading, so they put me in the pits. The stop was slow, I lost a couple of seconds, I think. That a second or so, whatever. I went out, I saw that Daniel [Ricciardo, aunque en realidad era Norris] he passed, Max was coming, but I was ahead, I made sure to leave a car outside for him. “

“I went into Turn 1, I was ahead, and I was still ahead going into Turn 2. Then all of a sudden he was on top of me.”

Both pilots have come to testify before the commissioners from Monza at 17:15 CEST waiting to see if they decide to sanction any of them.

But Hamilton explained why he thinks he left enough room to handle Turn 1 without touching each other and gave an example of the touch they both suffered on the first lap.

“It’s exactly the same scenario that happened in Turn 4, where I went around the outside, I was in exactly the same position, but I gave way to him, and that’s the way the races are. Today he didn’t want to give in. He knew when he got into 2 what would happen. I knew it was going to go over the curbs. But it still did. But we’ll talk to the stewards and see. I really don’t know what else to say, “he added.
