If there’s one thing gamers have been asking Valve for years it’s Half-Life 3. However, the company has repeatedly denied the existence or development of a major new installment of the popular saga.
With the arrival of Half-Life: Alyx, the community has new hopes of seeing the long-awaited third installment, but currently nothing is confirmed. Now, thanks to Geoff Keighley and his project The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx, we know that Valve tried to develop Half-Life 3.
Unfortunately, the company canceled the third installment and at least 4 other Half-Life related titles. Fortunately, we have details of some of them.
Details of canceled Half-Life projects
In The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx, Keighley claims that Valve worked on at least 5 Half-Life games. They were all planned after Half-Life 2: Episode Two, but were canceled.
Of course, the standout project is one that was to become Half-Life 3. The third installment is reported to be in development between 2013 and 2014. Valve used the Source 2 engine and was inspired by Left 4 Dead for the concept. of the new game.
Half-Life 3 was going to be different from past installments, as it was going to use procedural technology to randomly generate a building and a target, which was to rescue a prisoner.
Unfortunately, Source 2 did not yet have all the tools necessary for development, so Half-Life 3 was canceled. We know that Valve also worked on a project known as Borealis, a Half-Life VR game that was to be directed by Marc Laidlaw.
The title was to be placed between the first and the second installment. Borealis was going to include a fishing minigame in virtual reality. As is evident, its development was also canceled.
Valve does not rule out returning to Half-Life in the future
Not all is bad news, as Keighley notes that much of the team would like to make a new Half-Life game on a grand scale and without virtual reality. This enthusiasm is due to the great success of Alyx and the possibilities offered by the new technology.
The creatives did not mention a specific idea for this possible new game, but it is estimated that Valve has been developing a secret project since 2018. Many believe that it could be a new Half-Life, but so far nothing has been confirmed.
