The weekend started in good shape for Valtteri Bottas. After announcing yesterday the renewal of his contract with Mercedes until the end of 2021, today he set the best time in the first free practice session of the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Once again, the high temperatures in the environment and on the asphalt have shown that the tires will suffer again on the 5.8 km of this track. In addition, this problem is accentuated by having softer compounds. On several cars the high degradation was evident, even on the hard compound. For this reason, a one-stop strategy is risky and unwise.
With a time of 1: 26.144, Valtteri Bottas improved by 1.3s the time set the week in this same session by Max Verstappen. After the Finn was 0.138s his teammate and current championship leader, Lewis Hamilton. The Briton made a mistake on his fastest lap and could not improve afterwards.
In third place was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at 0.727s, followed by Racing Point’s Nico Hülkenberg at 0.776s. The German pilot replaces Sergio Pérez again after a new positive test for COVID-19.
Ferrari got off to a good start with Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel in fifth and seventh places. In between them was Red Bull’s Alexander Albon. The top 10 was completed by Lance Stroll from Racing Point, Daniil Kvyat from AlphaTauri and Esteban Ocon from Renault.
The McLaren of Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz again started the first session outside the early stages, taking a different approach in preparation as usual. From less to more.
In this session the Polish Robert Kubica took the car of Antonio Giovinazzi to continue his role as test driver at Alfa Romeo. He finished nineteenth three-tenths behind Kimi Räikkönen.
