Uruguay reaches a total record of COVID-19 positives by exceeding 50,000

This morning, the first 580,000 doses of the vaccine, produced by the Serum Institute of India, arrived at the international airport of the Buenos Aires town of Ezeiza, thanks to the transfer of technology from AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

This shipment is in addition to the 400,000 doses that Argentina received last Friday from Sputnik V and that it has already begun to distribute to the provinces, for which the country received a total of 1.22 million doses of the Russian vaccine – half of the first dose and half of the second-, far from the 5 million expected last January.

The country has until today 1,800,000 doses of vaccines against covid-19 when counting the four flights received with Sputnik V (including the doses of the first component and those of the one applied 21 days after the first inoculation) and the doses of Covishield (the second component of which is applied after four weeks, according to the Government) that arrived today.

Argentina expects to receive a second similar batch of the vaccine with AstraZeneca-Oxford technology.

This total batch of 1.16 million Covishield doses is an extension of AstraZeneca-Oxford’s 22.4 million vaccine contract that is produced in Argentina and packaged in Mexico, according to the Health Ministry.

ACCELERATE AFTER DELAY

With these new deliveries, Argentina seeks to start « another, more accelerated rate of vaccination », hand in hand with « different providers, » Health Minister Ginés González García told the media this morning at the airport, after the vaccination program was delayed by the delay of new shipments from Russia.

The objective is « to end the vaccination of health personnel, there are very few left, » said González García. «And start with the oldest, the most vulnerable. Some provinces at 70, others at 80. It is a gradualism according to the organization of each province, « he added, to avoid the serious consequences of the disease.

« I calculate that if all goes well, in August, September we have all Argentines vaccinated, except those under 18 years old, » said González García.

OVER 70 YEARS

The province of Buenos Aires, the most populated in the country with 17 million inhabitants, will incorporate people over 70 years of age and teachers into the vaccination process from tomorrow, according to the Buenos Aires Minister of Health, Daniel Gollán, reported on Wednesday.

It happens after having received 135,000 doses of the Sputnik V shipment that arrived on Friday and for the 232,000 doses of the Covishield that will be available next week.

They will be joined by health workers, people in nursing homes and teachers with risk factors.

As detailed in the press conference where the governor, Axel Kicillof, was also present, the province is aiming to vaccinate 75% of health workers, some 181,000 people, of which some 143,000 have already been applied.

Meanwhile, the city of Buenos Aires will open the second stage of vaccination on Monday of next week, which corresponds to the elderly, from the arrival of the Covishield vaccine and after having received a final delivery of 39,000 Sputnik V vaccines. of the first component and 15,000 of the second.

The capital of the country will open the registration for people who are 80 years old and over, said the Buenos Aires Minister of Health, Fernán Quirós today.

« We have started in the elderly, especially in the most vulnerable, because the number of vaccines is still not enough for all of them, » said Quirós.

The vaccination of the elderly as of Monday includes the 498 nursing homes that the city has.

Quirós recalled that the vaccination of health personnel « has not been completed » and that as the shipments of vaccines accelerate, the city will be able to « descend to people from 70 to 79 years who have not been included » in this new stage vaccination.

OTHER VACCINES

The country began its voluntary immunization plan against covid-19 on December 29 with the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, of which it has already received four shipments, the last last Friday.

According to official data updated until February 12, 367,665 people have been inoculated with the first dose in Argentina, which has around 45 million inhabitants, and 222,185 also obtained the second.

The country has commitments for a total of 62.6 million doses of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 with the Russian Gamaleya Institute, Britain’s AstraZeneca and the UN Covax alliance.

In order to continue expanding the number of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, last week González García signed a letter of intent to dispose of doses of the Chinese CanSino vaccine, while continuing to negotiate with the laboratories Pfizer, Janssen, Moderna, Sinopharm and the Brazilian institute Butantan that produces the Sinovac Biotech vaccine, according to the Ministry of Health.

Argentina accumulates 2,033,060 positive cases of SARS-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic and 50,432 deaths from covid-19. .
