I get a lot of emails about blockchain and cryptocurrencies, almost all of them totally irrelevant to our coverage of PC games. I was expecting more of the same when the Crypto: Against All Odds ad appeared in my inbox. But I quickly changed my mind when I got to what is the undeniable and intriguing core concept: Plants vs. Cryptocurrency zombies.
Crypto: Against All Odds puts players in the role of a blockchain security expert during the early days of Bitcoin, battling bugs, hackers, and other cybersecurity threats through PvZ-inspired gameplay. Instead of zombies on your lawn, there are blackhats on your network; Instead of Sunflowers, Peashooters, and Wall-nuts, you will face your enemies armed with six cryptocurrencies and four « fiat powers » – monetary policy modifiers that grant new or improved powers to your crypto units. Okay, it’s a little less catchy than plants.
Between jobs, you’ll also have access to an upgradeable cyber center that will allow you to access additional features and new game modes, as well as side missions that you can complete, from chatting with your cyber crew to trading cryptocurrencies and playing minigames. Most intriguingly, it also promises an « interactive Cypherpunk story » that will unfold as you play, about a vast conspiracy whose goal is to end crypto space and discover the truth of who you are.
Bizarre Plans – Participate in a Runners vs. Zombies
Marvel’s Ultraman is basically a sci-fi version of Monster Hunter
(Unlike cyberpunk, a cypherpunk, as defined by Wikipedia, « is any individual who advocates the widespread use of strong cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies as an avenue for social and political change. » It derives from the Cypherpunks mailing list that existed in the early 90’s).
It’s hard to say how Crypto: Against All Odds will work. It may be nothing more than a tower defense knockoff from Plants vs. Unlovely zombies with a trendy tech showcase, but my hope is that the gameplay lives up to its inspiration and that the underlying narrative is clever enough to give it some depth. Crypto: Against All Odds launches March 2 on Steam and GOG, and more information can be found first at cryptoagainstallodds.com and on Discord.
