Project S will keep the Brazilian city of Serrana, in Sao Paulo, under the focus of scientists fighting the coronavirus.
Serrana is a city of 126 square kilometers, located in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. It has just under 44,000 inhabitants and will be used for a great experiment related to the coronavirus.
Nearly 30,000 adults will be offered a coronavirus vaccine in the next three months. The Butantan Institute will observe the results of the conference.
What is Project S?
The vaccine that will be distributed in Serrana is CoronaVac, developed by the Chinese company Sinovac. The so-called Project S seeks to find out if this injection certainly reduces the spread of the virus.
Everyone over 18 years of age will be vaccinated, except pregnant or lactating women, as well as people with serious illnesses.
Another objective of Project S is to know if the doses can completely prevent infections, including asymptomatic ones.
There is a fact that stands out Live Science: CoronaVac efficiency is 50.4%, unlike others, which exceed 90%. However, according to the Associated Press, the effectiveness against death is 100% in the Sinovac dose tests.
The first results are expected to arrive in twelve weeks. People will not be forced to receive the dose, nor will they be kept confined within the city. The monitoring will last for one year.
« Based on what we are going to learn, we will be able to tell the rest of the world what the real effect of the coronavirus vaccination is, » said Ricardo Palacios, director of the Butantan Institute, in conversation with CNN.
