Christian Horner, director of the Red Bull team, is clear that the new line-up formed by Sergio Pérez and Max Verstappen will mean the challenge against Mercedes, who previously starred in Formula 1, when Daniel Ricciardo drew up with the Dutch Max Verstappen.
It will be very difficult for (Pérez) to catch up on a single test directly, but he can play a real and very important role for the team and get both cars to consistently get closer to the Mercedes, Horner said in statements to the Autosport weekly.
The Mexican Checo Pérez, signed for the first time in a powerful team, this year with Red Bull, is the Austrian team’s option to win again with its two drivers.
The Jalisco, after 10 years in F1, won for the first time a Grand Prix on the penultimate date of the 2020 season, in Sakhir, after which he signed with the Austrian team to replace the Thai Alex Albon.
Regarding Verstappen, in an interview with the Formula 1 website, Horner said he was aware that the Dutch driver tops the Mercedes list if Lewis Hamilton retires at the end of the 2021 season.
It has matured enormously in recent years. And I think what he’s gotten out of the car in the last two years has been really impressive. I’m sure if Lewis decides to stop, then Max would naturally be the driver at the top of the list, but they also have George Russell, Horner noted. Obviously there are other drivers available to them as well. It all depends on relationships and that we produce a competitive car, said the manager, and revealed that, like many drivers, Verstappen has performance clauses in his contract.
Meanwhile, Red Bull announced yesterday the signing with a first Mexican sponsor, the insurance company Inter Protección, which will be included in the new RB16B car.
