The PlayStation 5 DualSense is in the spotlight after multiple cases of drift have been reported. The controversy evolves rapidly, as even a legal firm has already started an investigation in this regard.

The goal is to gather testimonies and file a class action lawsuit against Sony for product quality and poor customer support capabilities regarding drift. Due to the above, some hardware experts have taken on the task of analyzing the control components in greater detail.

iFixIt, a YouTube channel dedicated to technology, recently published a video that tries to explain how and why drift originates in the DualSense of PlayStation 5.

They investigate the drift of the DualSense of PlayStation 5

IFixIt explains that the DualSense uses the same hardware on its sticks as other consoles, such as PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, to name a few. According to information from the parts manufacturer, the life of the stick potentiometers is expected to be 2 million cycles.

On the other hand, the levers are estimated to withstand up to 500,000 push cycles. IFixIt translates these figures and calculates that the sticks have a useful life of 417 hours, depending on the type of game that is enjoyed on the console. This metric was made with Call of Duty: Warzone in mind.

Thus, the lifespan of the DualSense sticks could be approximately 7 months if used for 2 hours a day. IFixIt concludes that the drift problem arises from the general wear of the potentiometers.

The channel clarifies that they are estimates and that players should not necessarily experience drift on their controls. He also points out that companies should think of sticks as consumable parts and design controls for easy replacement. Below is the video:

While gamers who suffer from the problem have the option of making their warranty valid or resorting to Sony customer service, it is not good news that one more controller has drift months after its official debut. As of this writing, the company has not shared any statement in this regard.
