NASA researchers discovered one of the oldest planetary systems, ten billion years old. What do scientists say about it?
The Universe still has so much, so much to discover. The latest thing NASA scientists found: one of the oldest planetary systems.
Its name is TOI-561, and its planet, a super-earth – it is larger than our Earth, with some conditions similar-, is called TOI-561b.
The star is 10 billion years old, and has a rocky planet called TOI-561b orbiting it. The star is twice the age of the Sun!
The new super-earth, belonging to one of the oldest planetary systems
What is the planet TOI-561b like? According to NASA scientists, it is about 1.5 times the size of Earth. It has an extremely fast orbit, circling its star twice as often compared to a single Earth day.
« The multi-planet system is found in the thick galactic disk, » the scientists note. « It contains a rocky planet, with an ultra-short period (…) with three small planets in transit. »
« TOI-561b is the first rocky planet around a thick disk galactic star, confirmed with radial velocities, » they point out. « It is one of the best rocky planets for studies of thermal emissions. »
The research was published in The Astronomical Journal, and had 62 accredited scientists.
Can it be inhabited?
According to Lauren Weiss, one of the astronomers, « the existence of TOI-561b shows that rocky planets have been forming almost since the beginning of the Universe, 14 billion years ago. »
However, this planet has very remote possibilities of being habitable. Its temperature would rise to more than 1,700 ° C. Furthermore, its density is unusually low, despite its size.
The planetary system was discovered thanks to the mission data TESS from NASA, and using the QM Keck Observatory in Hawaii.
