A new private notification system, in which the patient’s full name and symptoms will be included, will allow confirmation of whether they are cases of Covid-19.

There is in Mexico more than 30 thousand positive results, from private laboratories, which cannot be automatically added to the official figures, but which – after analysis and exclusion of duplicates – will be integrated into the Covid-19 figures.

In other words, have the report of positive results does not necessarily mean that it is confirmed cases.

This was reported by the director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, José Luis Alomía Zegarra, at the evening press conference this Friday, May 22.

The official explained that a new notification system for private results, in which the full name of the patient and their symptoms will be included, which will allow confirming that they are cases of Covid-19 and avoiding duplication.

It was not mentioned by Alomía Zegarra, but it is likely that with this new notification system confirmed cases increase significantly.

Results validated by Indre

So far, the private laboratories that report their results to the National Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (INDRE), as of May 21, reported 30,472 positive results, Alomia reported, specifying:

It is important to emphasize that we are talking about positive results and we are not talking about cases or people confirmed with the disease; therefore, we cannot take this data and directly add it to the data that we give day by day.

Why? Because these are positive results, but we don’t know at the moment whether or not those people had symptoms. If they had no symptoms, the classification is carrier, not case, case is the person who expresses symptoms and, therefore, is ill, that is, they have COVID-19.

Let us remember that the virus is SARS-Cov-2 and its identification is to know that it is SARS-Cov-2 it is colonizing the respiratory tract, but if the person does not develop disease, they do not have COVID-19, because COVID-19 is the disease that produces the SARS-Cov-2 virus.

Alomía Zegarra explained that many of these people could also have demanded attention in units that sampled institutionally and, therefore, there could be duplication.

He added that last Thursday there was a meeting with the network of private laboratories that is validated by Indre and a new notification system for its results is already being implemented.

In this new system, the full name of the patient will now be reported and the symptoms will be reported; therefore, now with this new computer tool, now we can know the results that the private laboratories are giving us, which are cases and with the full name we can know that they are not duplicated in the institutional base and then we will have a data that in due course we will be able to add to the total statistics of confirmed cases nationwide.
