The Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), through its Science Park, has started the validation phase of a prototype self-filtering respiratory protection mask which allows both health personnel and all those who are in contact with patients diagnosed by COVID_19, a greater protection and minimize the risk of contagion.

This design has been developed by the technicians of the Prototyping Laboratory of the UMH Science Park, with the close collaboration of the medical directors, intensivist doctors and prevention personnel of hospitals in the province, including the University of Vinalopó and the HLA Vistahermosa Hospital.

Flexible and adaptable rubber face mask

This mask consists of a Flexible and adaptable rubber housing and a HEPA H13 filtering system removable and changeable. The latter allows this mask to be reusableAs it can undergo chemical disinfection processes. In addition, it has a ergonomic and watertight design, which minimizes the risk of contagion of health personnel, residences, etc.

Currently, this prototype mask is in process of validation by the Textile Industry Research Association (AITEX), an entity dedicated to the research, testing and certification of textile articles and materials. After the validation tests, which will certify the model and determine the level of effectiveness of the mask, the technicians of the Scientific Park (PCUMH) will be able to start manufacturing and distributing these innovative protection systems.

The production process would be carried out initially thanks to the equipment available in the Prototyping Laboratory of the UMH Science Park, in addition to the equipment provided by individuals or companies. However, study other large-scale production pathways with the collaboration of companies in the province.

This
new proposal joins other initiatives launched by the
UMH to help slow the spread of the pandemic or alleviate its
effects. For example, the manufacture of a clamping system
external pacemaker that allows to release beds in the ICU, through
of the transfer of patients with temporary cardiac pacing to
plant, or participation in a research project that
seeks to anticipate coronavirus pneumonia by applying the
Artificial Intelligence, so they could be prevented
serious consequences on patients.
