A man go to a supermarket, she does her shopping and prepares to pay. After going through the checkout, he tries to leave the premises when falls collapsed at the door of the establishment. The cashier and the rest of the people in the store turn, look at him, and some even take out their mobile to record the situation but no one comes to help him.

Several minutes pass and the man remains inert on the ground before the indifference of some and the curiosity of others but no one reacts to help him. Nobody picks him up. Nobody even comes close. Nobody seems to call 911.
It is China and the video of what happened –captured by security cameras– is already going viral given the incomprehension that Chinese cruel inaction in the face of the suffering of others arouses in other corners of the world.

The details about what happened are unclear and at the moment the only thing that is known with certainty is that the moment occurred on July 27, 2021, as the security camera shows, in a location that has not yet been determined within China.
It is not the first time that a situation de this type takes place in the Asian giant, which provokes a wave of indignation both inside and outside the country. In 2011 a video was very controversial in which you see a girl of only two years old, Wang Yue, –and who came to be known as Little Yue–, who was run over by a van and abandoned wounded on the asphalt.
The driver paused, but finally kept driving and drove away, as passersby looked at the crying girl, lying on the road, to later continue on his way. So for seven long minutes until a garbage collector came to her aid and took her to the hospital.
Unfortunately, the girl died from her injuries. The incident, in Henan province, sparked deep debate, an examination of conscience, as well as shame and anger among many Chinese.
In 2017 something similar happened in the same province in the center of the country. A woman was run over by a car and passers-by ignored her as she lay injured on the road, until another car struck her again, this time fatally.

Why is Chinese society not reacting?
These incidents cause the resurgence of the heated debate on the values among the Chinese people, with reactions on social networks that show their surprise and horror, wondering what is the problem of society in the most populous country in the world.
Other netizens, however, they also talk about “scammers” who fake an injury to obtain compensation, as well as the pragmatism of pedestrians, who prefer not to get into trouble or have to bear the medical or living expenses of the victims.
In this case, apparently, the man have had a heart attack but it has not yet been possible to confirm the fate of this man, if he was rescued and if he has recovered.
For some analysts, these tragic incidents do not simply reflect a lack of compassion or empathy from the Chinese, but a unfortunate combination of fear, lack of confidence and a social and political system like the Chinese, where “moral obligation and loyalty is due only to the group of the closest.”
