The project is called Odeuropa and aims to recreate smells from 100 to 500 years ago, using Artificial Intelligence.
Through advances in science, implementing Artificial Intelligence, a new project aims to recreate smells of the past. Is called Europe and will bring back smells of the 16th century. It is an initiative of the UAnglia Ruskin University (England) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
There are records of any kind of event that occurred between 100 and 500 years ago. The books tell it in great detail. There are even re-enactments in series, movies and plays. The clothing, the customs and even the architecture.
However, there is something that is much more difficult to recreate: the smell of the time. For this project, the Horizon 2020 program of the European Union, allocated a figure close to 3.3 million dollars.
Smells through Artificial Intelligence
The project will use the Artificial intelligence and through the texts he will try to recreate the smells. Among the aromas are herbs that were used against diseases such as the plague. In addition to industrial odors and characteristic tones of tobacco leaves, the Daily Mail reported.
« Artificial intelligence will search ancient texts for odor descriptions in seven languages. It will then compile them for experts to examine, » say the project’s promoters.
« We will analyze, for example, the role of industrial odors. We expected to find many mentions in texts by Italian futurists, for example, the smell of motor oil, » they added.
