The COVID-19 pandemic “is an immeasurable matter,” laments López-Gatell

Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell explained that every life lost to the COVID-19 pandemic is a tragedy and not just a number

The Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, stressed that the 100,104 deaths from COVID-19 in Mexico are “a human tragedy”, since the pandemic itself “is an immeasurable matter.”

In an interview with Joaquín López-Dóriga for Radio Formula, the federal official pointed out that the world, in general, lives a scenario not seen in more than one hundred years, specifically since the influenza pandemic of 1918 that left 20 million deaths.

About the more than one hundred thousand deaths in Mexico, the undersecretary López-Gatell Ramírez He exposed that every life lost is a tragedy and not just a number.

He described as “a sadness” to have exceeded the catastrophic scenario projected 60 thousand deaths from the disease.

These 100,000 people in Mexico are individuals who at some point played a social role, an affective role, were the economic support of their family. They all deserve deep respect for who they were, for the void they leave and for the families that were left without them, ”he lamented.

In these times of pandemic, stressed the undersecretary, it is very important to solidarity, because all people run the same risk of getting sick and face the same adverse situation.

Maintaining unity, solidarity, is a decision of harmony, that we all walk in the same direction to save this planet, this species that is fundamental, ”he mentioned.

He recalled that in this sense, the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador pushed before the United Nations (UN) an initiative to guarantee equal global access to medicines, vaccines and medical equipment to face COVID-19.

This initiative was co-sponsored by 160 countries and adopted at the UN General Assembly.

However, López-Gatell Ramírez stated that there are currently no vaccine that has demonstrated efficacy and safety against SARS-CoV-2.

The possibility of having them is getting closer and closer, the different countries have explored early opportunities to have these vaccines, always guaranteeing that if they arrive, they have demonstrated safety and efficacy ”, he said.

COVID-19 outbreak in Mexico

Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell reiterated that since March the Ministry of Health warned a virus outbreak, in the cold season, due to its characteristics similar to influenza.

He explained that the pandemic is not required to have been controlled to speak of a rebound or rebound.

The regrowth in Mexico occurred in the north central states, starting in Chihuahua, followed by Coahuila, Durango Zacatecas, Nuevo León, Aguascalientes and Querétaro.

In the case of Mexico City, there is an upward trend with a higher speed of hospitalizations.

The trend is too fast to occupy hospitals, it is the product of a higher rate of infections, and since Mexico City is the most populated area of the country, more intensive measures are required to change this trend of increasing infections and some deaths.”

Despite the current situation of COVID-19 in the capital, the official considered that the handling of the pandemic by the Government of Claudia Sheinbaum has had a great talent to detect and treat cases.

Media, on the verge of ‘political profit’ due to the pandemic

Hugo Lopez-Gatell considered that a great variety of opinions have been seen in Mexico and other parts of the world before the coronavirus pandemic, which is always appropriate.

We do not have any reservations about criticism, we take the essence of concern, “he explained.

But he assured, it is clearly recognizable that due to a “limited agenda” of some media they are on the verge of a “political profit” in the information, instead of promoting useful messages about the pandemic.

It seems that the agenda is not of public interest but of another type ”, he stated.
