Like their counterparts in the French women’s team, the Blues lost in the quarterfinals of the TQO on Friday in Rotterdam against Greece on penalties. They will not compete in the Tokyo Games either.
France will have no representative in water polo on the occasion of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games postponed to the summer of 2021 (July 23 to August 8). Like their counterpart in the French women’s team, the Blues did not succeed either in reaching the final of the Olympic qualifying tournament (TQO), synonymous with ticket for the Olympics. Exactly like the Blues last month, the French stopped in the quarter-finals this Friday after their loss to Greece in Rotterdam (Netherlands). However, if the French had taken a correction against Hungary, the Blues, them, do not have to be ashamed after their elimination. They therefore had to pass the Greek obstacle and keep a chance of winning their ticket to Japan. Unfortunately, the penalty shootout got the better of our representatives. After snatching in extremis the right to participate in this session by equalizing thirty seconds from the end with 13 goals everywhere, the Blues lost 4 goals to 1 (17-14 final score) during these shots on goal that came to deprive them of a second consecutive Olympic tournament after that of 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
In 2024, France will automatically qualify for the Olympic tournament

France will not go to the Tokyo Olympics 🤽🏼♂️
Defeat of the Blues against the Greeks 17-14 at the end of the penalty shootout. Cruel !
France will therefore play places 5 to 8 in the tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

For its very first appearance at the Games since the 1992 edition in Barcelona, the French men’s team had to settle for eleventh place out of twelve competing countries. In 2024 in Paris, as for women, the problem will not arise. The Blues will in fact also automatically qualify for this Paris Olympiad as the host country of the event. The TQO does not end there for as much for France, since it will try to console itself by finishing in the fifth place of the tournament this weekend during the classification matches of the 5th to the 8th place. Whatever the outcome, it will constitute little consolation despite everything for these Blues who dreamed of being present at the Games again, five years after Rio. This will not be the case.
