Lawyers for the so-called « Apostle » have asked for his release, arguing that he could die if he contracts the coronavirus as he suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, but Judge George Lomeli, of the Los Angeles Superior Court (United States) denied the request and today established a new audience for August 6.
Lomeli pointed out that the case remains open since she has not yet sent the verdict of the Second District Court of Appeals, which in April dismissed the criminal process due to a technical failure, and hopes to receive the brief no later than August 5.
The Court noted that, because the audience Joaquin’s preliminary hearing was not carried out in an expedited manner and that the accused did not renounce that right, the charges had to be dismissed.
Joaquín, 51, has been detained since June 3, 2019 without bail and after the magistrate’s decision, he must continue behind bars in Los Angeles.
