Last year a good number of drivers failed to start their final qualifying lap at Monza, as none wanted to offer their rivals suction so that they could achieve a higher final speed. The stopwatch reached zero and it was an embarrassing fact. To avoid a repeat this year, the stewards of the Italian GP have taken measures.
Firstly, to prevent cars from slowing unnecessarily during laps after the end of qualifying or during reconnaissance laps when the pit is open for the race, drivers must turn below 1: 43.0 between the lines of the Safety Car.
Also for safety reasons, during each free practice session, acts such as crossing the car on the track to block another car, can be reviewed by the stewards.
Today during the two free testing sessions at Monza, some maneuvering and traffic were already seen to prevent suction. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.
