A Contracorriente Films presents the Spanish trailer for ‘The father‘, a cousin of the novelist and playwright Florian Zeller that is based on his own play.
The film, written by Zeller himself with Christopher Hampton, screenwriter of ‘Dangerous Friendships’, ‘Atonement’ or ‘A Dangerous Method’, has a cast led by Oscar winners Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, who are seconded Mark Gatiss (‘Sherlock’), Imogen Poots (‘Vivarium’), Rufus Sewell (‘The man in the castle’) or Olivia Williams (‘Counterpart’), among others.
‘The father‘tells the story of Anthony, a man in his early 80s who lives alone in his London apartment and who rejects every one of the nurses that his daughter, Anne, tries to impose on him. However, such a need is increasingly pressing for her, as she has decided to move to Paris to live with a man she has just met. It soon becomes apparent that the perception of reality is increasingly confusing for Anthony.
The debut of the original work, which is part of a theatrical trilogue that includes ‘The mother’ and ‘The son’, was in 2012 in Paris, where it won the Molire Award for Best Play.
The aforementioned Christopher Hampton did the English translation and it premiered in London’s West End in 2015, winning the Olivier Award for Best Actor for Kenneth Cranham. Frank Langella starred when the play appeared on Broadway and won the Tony Award. In our country, Hector Alterio and Ana Labordeta were in charge of interpreting the protagonists of the play in 2016.
After passing through festivals such as Sundance, Toronto or San Sebastián, where he won the audience award, A Contracorriente Films premiere ‘The father‘in Spain on December 25, a week after Sony Pictures Classics does it in the United States under the band of being one more than possible contenders for the Oscars.
