While Sony may boast that PlayStation Studios has some of the most recognized creative teams in the industry, it appears that the company’s strategy will become more ambitious due to the launch of the Playstation 5. According to a Bloomberg report, Sony plans to open the portfolio to buy Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd., a Chinese entertainment company. The most interesting thing, however, is that the Asian company owns several important studies.
Among its properties we find Digital Extremes, the London studio responsible for the Warframe and Dark Sector franchises. They have extensive experience with third-person shooting games, since together with Epic Games they created the Unreal saga. They also developed the first Bioshock for PlayStation 3 and the multiplayer mode for BioShock 2 and Homefront. Although their headquarters are in the English capital, they also have a studio in Toronto, Canada.
Digital Extremes, Splash Damage and Certain Affinity are among the most prominent studios of Leyou Technologies
Splash Damage It is another of his studies. The London-based team is an expert in online modalities. They were in charge of the Doom 3 multiplayer, Batman: Arkham Origins, Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. However, the highlight of their history is the development of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, the version of Halo PC: The Master Chief Collection and most recently Gears Tactics. They are now working on a project yet to be announced.
Leyou also owns Certain Affinity, the creative team located in Austin, Texas. It was founded by several former Bungie employees; In its portfolio of projects are the multiplayer modes of Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Doom. Even more important, they are Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 4 co-developers, while in 2016 they participated with Activision in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered.
As if all of the above were not enough, Leyou is responsible for the Lord of the Rings MMO with Amazon Game Studios. This title was announced in mid-2019 and promises to be a « new and immersive gaming experience to explore Tolkien’s vast world. » It is worth mentioning that, although Sony is the best placed to make the purchase, there are two other interested parties: Zhejiang Century Huatong Group Co. and iDreamSky Technology Holdings Ltd.
Strengthening the catalog of the PlayStation 5
Without a doubt, Sony would greatly strengthen the PlayStation Studios label if the purchase is completed. It is clear that exclusive games will once again be a fundamental pillar in the next generation, and both Sony and Microsoft know that expanding their first-party catalog is key to driving sales of their new consoles. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will hit the market during the last quarter of 2020.
