Epic Games, the company best known for being the creator of Fortnite: Battle Royale and Unreal Engine, is very important in the gaming industry. It is therefore not surprising that Sony has decided to invest a millionaire to become a minority shareholder in the company.

According to information from VentureBeat, Sony Interactive Entertainment invested $ 250 MDD in Epic Games. With the above, Sony becomes a minority shareholder of the company responsible for Fortnite. For its part, with this figure Epic Games adds $ 1.83 MMDD in investments from different companies.

While important, this move may surprise a few, after all Sony and Epic Games have had a close relationship for a long time. This became clear when Epic Games showed the first demo of Unreal Engine 5 running on a PlayStation 5, as well as various content exclusivity deals from Fortnite: Battle Royale.

It is worth mentioning that this deal is independent of a recent round of investment with which Epic Gams sought to get $ 750 MDD.

Epic Games and Sony will expand their collaboration

It is worth mentioning that Sony Interactive Entertainment will not have much influence within Epic Games. After all, he only got enough stock to become a minority shareholder, while Tencent owns 40% of the company. So you should expect to see Epic Games products on other platforms as it has been so far.

That said, it is important to note that the deal will be very important for both companies, since they seek to expand their collaboration with him. This taking advantage of the portfolio of entertainment and technology that Sony has, as well as the social platform and the ecosystem that Epic Games has.

In a statement, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, noted that with this agreement they have plans to build a « more open and accessible digital ecosystem for all consumers and content creators. » For his part, Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony, stressed that Epic Games technology has managed to maintain it as one of the leading developers in the industry.
