For years, Pokémon fans have been screaming for The Pokémon Company to hand them an MMO based on the popular monster-catching franchise. The above has not happened, but it seems that it is not due to lack of interest, since information was found that seems to indicate that a kind of Pokémon MMO was in development at the beginning of the millennium.
As part of the Gigaleak, a massive leak from different Nintendo projects, files were discovered suggesting that a Pokémon MMO was in development around 2004. The project was the brainchild of iQue, a Chinese company founded by Nintendo, which worked on a prototype to propose the concept to Nintendo.
The files indicate that iQue’s idea was to develop a project for Game Boy Advance in which the console would connect to the computer to access the Internet. Once the game was online players could find different creatures; a dynamic climate based on the region from where you connect and online battles.
An interesting element is that, when connected to the computer, the game was going to have modes in which 3D rendered Pokémon were going to appear on the computer screen. In these sections, the Game Boy Advance would have been used as a control.
That is not all, since it would also offer the possibility of storing the Pokémon on a server. Also, there would be different events with which you would be able to offer different rewards.

Pokémon MMO would also work offline
Now, it is important to note that the iQue project would also work offline. This so that its users could enjoy it without having the need to be glued to the computer.

The offline experience for this game was to be based on Fire Red and Leaf Green, featuring 36 different creatures and a Kanto-like map. That said, several of the features would be limited, since the idea was for the community to connect to the Internet.
iQue was working on a completely « main » Pokémon game back in 2004.
