GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) – Shakhtar Donetsk crushed Basel 4-1 on Tuesday to seal his ticket to the Europa League semi-finals, where he will meet Inter.
Four Brazilians scored for the Ukrainian side before Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored a consolation goal for the Swiss team.
Júnior Moraes put Shakhtar ahead after just two minutes, when he hit a Marlos corner kick and sent it to the nets. It was the 25th goal of the Brazilian striker, a naturalized Ukrainian, in the different competitions.
He had scored two goals against Wolfsburg last week, in the round of 16 of this tournament rescheduled by the coronavirus.
Afimico Pululu came close to equalizing with good individual action for Basel, but Taisno scored Shakhtar’s second goal with a deflected shot after a creditable team play in the 22nd minute.
Marcos Antônio was close to getting the third deal. He hit the horizontal with a warped shot at 40 minutes. On the rebound, Raoul Petretta covered Moraes’ shot.
Alan Patrick converted a penalty in the 75th, virtually securing the Ukrainian team’s place in the top four round, before right-back Dodô took the fourth target.
The tournament is played in an abbreviated format in Germany, due to the pandemic, which forced all European competitions to stop their activity for months.
Shakhtar will play Inter in Düsseldorf on August 17. The final will take place in nearby Colonia four days later.
