The FIA and Formula 1 have confirmed that the Mexican driver Sergio Pérez has tested positive for the COVID-19 and will not be able to participate in the British GP that will take place this weekend at the Silverstone Circuit.
The authorities commented that after the previous test in which the result had been declared ‘inconclusive’, a new examination confirmed the positive of ‘Checo’.
In an official statement, the Racing Point team stated: “Checo is physically well and in a good mood, but will continue to isolate himself according to the guidelines of the relevant public health authorities, with safety as the highest priority for the team and the sport.” indicated the letter.
The team also indicated that their intention is to participate with both cars in this Grand Prix, so the replacement of Sergio Pérez will be announced shortly.
At the moment two candidates are outlined to be Lance Stroll’s teammate this weekend: Esteban Gutiérrez and Nico Hülkenberg. In the case of the Mexican, he is currently a test pilot for Mercedes, a brand of Racing Point’s power unit. Regarding the German, he has an excellent relationship with the team, which he was part of in 2012 and from 2014 to 2016.
