Despite all odds, Rare made Sea of Thieves a hit. The pirates title has a huge community on both consoles and PC, so the studio has several plans to keep the game active for years to come.
Mike Chapman, creative director of the title, shared details about important changes and some news coming to Sea of Thieves in early 2021. If you are part of their community, you should know that Rare is working on a new progression system.
Because of this, Sea of Thieves will go for a familiar approach if you’ve enjoyed Fortnite, other Battle Royale, or more recently Fall Guys. This since the pirate game will have a model of seasons and passes.

Rare to revamp Sea of Thieves progression system
In the latest development diary, Chapman said that, for the past year and a half, they have updated Sea of Thieves on a monthly basis. This will change for 2021, when it will bet on a system of seasons and content passes.
The creative explained that each season of the game will last approximately 3 months. Each period will feature new content, experiences, and more ways for players to have fun together.
On the other hand, the seasons will be full of events of various kinds, so the community can also get special content in other ways. Most of the rewards can be unlocked by playing, with no payments involved.
Another important novelty is Plunder Pass, the equivalent of the Battle Pass that everyone knows. This is a paid add-on with which players can get exclusive rewards. Season 1 of the title will begin in January, on a date yet to be confirmed.
For his part, Joe Neate, executive producer of the game, revealed that they will also focus on the development of the Adventure mode, as it is the component most played by users. Arena will remain active, but will not receive any new features in the future.
Rare confirmed that the game has been a success throughout 2020, with more than 11 million people enjoying it this year alone. Another interesting detail is that its community is divided equally between consoles and PC.
