Santander, the only bank in Mexico included in the S&P Global “Sustainability Yearbook 2021”

Banco Santander’s subsidiary in Mexico has been the only entity in that country included in the S&P Global “Sustainability Yearbook” 2021, thanks to the advancement of its practices based on environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG, for its acronym in English). Additionally, it obtained the “Industry Mover” emblem, for exceeding the score obtained last year and presenting the strongest improvement in the financial sector.

In this regard, Marcela Espinosa Macías, Executive Director of Public Relations, Internal Communication and Responsible Banking at Santander Mexico, pointed out that “it is a global reality that sustainability criteria are increasingly determining for investments and a requirement of the community. For this reason, at Santander México we have been committed for more than 15 years, that our financing activity, our transparency and corporate governance practices and our impact on society, contribute to the progress of people and companies in balance with our environment, policies of which we are proud and that today distinguish us in the Mexican market ”.

For the 2021 edition of this yearbook, which is the most important of its kind globally, more than 7,032 companies from 61 industries around the world were selected and evaluated, but only 631 companies were included, of which only 6 were from Mexico. in different industries.

The subsidiary of Banco Santander in Mexico specified that it takes into account the role of banking in promoting economic activities that are compatible with the conservation of the environment and social equity and, therefore, directs its operations and internal processes, as part of its 2030 agenda, to generate continuous and profitable progress on ESG.

It should be noted that Grupo Santander maintains a firm commitment to sustainability and as an example of this, it has set the objective of providing more than 120,000 million euros in green financing by 2025, a figure that will rise to 220,000 million by 2030. In addition, recently, Banco Santander has strengthened its Santander CIB division with a team dedicated to developing ESG solutions and is promoting sustainable investment through its Santander Wealth Management & Insurance division. Santander is also developing other solutions in this area, such as the sustainability seal for SMEs launched this month.
