Samsung Galaxy mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) marketed since 2019 will have at least four years of security updates, according to the official announcement of the company where it agrees to increase support.
Something is starting to change between the manufacturers that work with the Android platform. With honorable exceptions, on too many occasions they have thought more about selling new mobiles than about offering their customers support worthy of the name, and complaints of “planned obsolescence” via software are latent, leaving terminal “thrown away” that by hardware could work for much longer.
The updates are the biggest problem of the Android platform And many users have opted for alternate ROMs for years. Others have gone to the other side, to Apple iPhones that in this matter offers much better support. And it is not acceptable that a high-end smart mobile of 600-800 or more than 1,000 euros cannot update to a new version of Android in just two years. Or the updates come months or even years after the release by Google.
At least in the security updates the situation will improve. The Samsung Galaxy will have at least four years of support with monthly or quarterly delivery of updates. In addition, the company extends it to the terminals marketed in 2019 and which are still for sale.
It has not been mentioned whether Samsung will roll out major Android updates. Google and Qualcomm announced a collaboration to support four versions of Android operating system and four years of security updates for all Snapdragon chipset devices, but the deal would start with the Snapdragon 888 platform.
Samsung Galaxy with increased support
The list is extensive and covers virtually any Samsung mobile device, tablets and smartphones, marketed from 2019 to date. Specific:
Folding Galaxy smartphones: Fold, Z Fold2 5G, Z Flip, Z Flip 5G Galaxy S smartphones: S10, S10 +, S10e, S10 5G, S10 Lite, S20 5G, S20 + 5G, S20 Ultra 5G, S20 FE 5G, S21 5G, S21 + 5G, S21 Ultra 5G Galaxy Note Smartphones: Note10, Note10 +, Note10 + 5G, Note20 5G, Note20 Ultra 5G Galaxy A smartphones: A10e, A20, A50, A11, A21, A51, A51 5G, A71 5G Galaxy XCover smartphones: XCover FieldPro, XCover Pro Tablets Galaxy Tab: Tab Active Pro, Tab Active3, Tab A 8 (2019), Tab A with S Pen, Tab A 8.4 (2020), Tab A7, Tab S5e, Tab S6, Tab S6 5G, Tab S6 Lite, Tab S7, Tab S7 +
Google is putting pressure on manufacturers and we hope that Samsung’s example will spread to the rest of the industry and that in addition to security updates, the versions of the operating system themselves will also increase. Four years it would be a figure that we can consider reasonable.
