The Samsung Chromebook 4 and Chromebook 4 Plus are the first computers with Chrome OS that the South Korean brand launches in Spain. These cheap laptops come to meet the demands of students and teachers who, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have been forced to adopt blended or even fully virtual teaching.
Both the Samsung Chromebook 4 and the Chromebook 4 Plus offer basic features. The objective in this case is to offer a stable machine, with reduced maintenance and, at the same time, very economical. For this reason, neither of the two laptops have touchscreens, styluses or state-of-the-art processors.
What features do the Samsung Chromebook 4 have?
Both the Samsung Chromebook 4 and the Chromebook 4 Plus feature an Intel Celeron N400 processor, a fairly basic component when compared to the 11th generation of chips introduced by Intel in early September. However, given the lightness of the Chrome OS operating system, it is likely to perform better than that of an equivalent Windows 10 machine.
Along with this processor, the Samsung incorporates a 4 or 6 GB RAM module. It also has 32 or 64 GB of eMMC storage, which can be extended with microSD cards. This capacity may seem meager, but since Chromebooks are highly cloud-based computers, it may be sufficient for many people.
The Samsung Chromebook 4 has a 11.6-inch screen with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), while the Chromebook 4 Plus has a 15.6-inch panel with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). Also, the smaller model has a single USB-C port, while the 15.6-inch variant has two such connectors.
As far as connectivity is concerned, these laptops have Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth, a USB-A port, a microSD card reader and a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. The two laptops also have an HD resolution camera and have a 39 Wh battery.
Chrome OS as the heart for these cheap laptops
The component that makes these computers interesting is Chrome OS. This operating system, which announced its arrival in Spain in May, promises to stand out in three directions:
Chrome OS computers require little maintenance. Laptops with Chrome OS, such as the Samsung Chromebook 4, regularly update in the background, have security systems that protect information, and can be easily maintained remotely by IT departments. This is important in sectors such as education.
They integrate with Google services, including educational applications. Since Chrome OS is an operating system developed by Google, computers with this software are integrated with the company’s educational applications, which are gradually making their way into the Spanish educational field.
Even the cheapest computers offer good performance. Chrome OS is a lightweight operating system that allows the machine to power up in seconds, and it works well even on less powerful hardware. This is very important to be able to reduce the sale price of the equipment, which is a fundamental factor in this area.
Available from today, but only for the education sector
Samsung has confirmed that the intention with these products is to meet the needs of the education sector. This is why, initially, only the Samsung Chromebook 4 and Chromebook 4 Plus can be purchased through sales channels for this sector. The brand, however, is not closed to that, in the future, they are also marketed in conventional distributors.
The Chromebook 4 is priced at 339 euros, while the Chromebook 4 Plus will sell for 429 euros. Both teams can be purchased from today.
