For more than a decade, various organizations for the rights of minorities in the United States have asked Redskins that they modify their name, always unanswered, until today.
A day after knowing that FedEx, one of its main sponsors, joined the pressure for a change, the Washington team has decided to undergo a revision of its nickname that, it is assured, will lead to a new one.
“Based on recent events in our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins announce that the team will undergo a thorough review of their name. The review formalizes the initial discussions the team has had with the League in the last weeks, “says a statement from the capital.
The NFL, through the commissioner Roger Goodell, confirmed the approaches with Dan Snyder, owner of the organization, who had been blunt in assuring that he would not deconfigure “the tradition” of the team he grew up loving.
“In the past few weeks, we have had constant discussions with Dan and we support this important step,” the statement read.
For his part, Snyder showed that his position has undergone a turn with the social context, not without leaving aside part of his previous speech.
“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise, but also the contributions of our former members, the organization, the sponsors, the NFL, and the local community that it is proud to represent within and off the field, “he declared.
As of the 2020 season, the three-time winners of the Super bowl will have as head coach Ron Rivera, distinguished for its support for minority communities in the North American country; also gave a message.
“This issue is of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure that we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our militia,” he said.
