Video games are a relatively accessible hobby. However, as with other collectibles, they can fetch incredible prices and we have witnessed several games that have been auctioned in exorbitant quantities, especially retro games. Well, one of the most popular games in the field of video game collecting today reached a new historical price.
A few weeks ago, we informed you that an extremely rare copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 was auctioned, as it was a prototype that had the Kid Icarus cover, which fetched $ 31,200 USD.
If you think that price was high, get ready, today the Heritage Auctions auction house announced that the sale of a rare copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 was finalized in exchange for $ 156,000 USD, which is equivalent to $ 3,136,726 MXN. The figure is not only the highest that this video game has reached, but it is the highest paid for a video game in all of history.

The millionaire copy has a highly valued detail in collecting
In fact, the record was broken 2 times this year. The first time happened in July, when a very good copy of Super Mario Bros. fetched $ 114,000. According to information from Game Informer, the auction for the copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 started at $ 62,500 USD and from there it did not stop rising until the bid reached $ 156,000 USD.
According to details from Heritage Auction, the title was sold at a price 5 times the estimated sale price of a copy in similar conditions. This title is highly coveted among collectors because the word “Bros.” appears on the left side of the box, covering Mario’s hand, compared to the usual boxes, in which it appears on the right side.
“We couldn’t be more pleased to break the world record for the second time in the same year. That said, it’s no surprise that another Mario game, which many of us grew up with, is setting the new bar, ”said Heritage Auctions’ director of video game industry (via Game Informer).
