Otmar Szafnauer affirms that the amount of virus “is diminishing”

In case of testing positive again, Hülkenberg would go back to the RP20

The head of Racing Point in Formula 1, Otmar Szafnauer, is “99%” convinced that Sergio Pérez will be able to race the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend after having lost two races at Silverstone due to the coronavirus.

The Mexican pilot tested positive for covid-19 after the ‘break’ between Hungary and Great Britain, so that he was forced not to participate in the two Silverstone appointments and his replacement was the German Nico Hülkenberg – who did a good job in the British layout.

Pérez’s situation is unknown at the moment, as he needs to test negative for covid-19 to race again in Formula 1, but the Racing Point boss assures that he has improved over time and hopes that he can return to the action in Spain.

“I was 99% sure that Nico would be in the car in the two Silverstone appointments, and now 99% sure that Checo will be in the car in Spain,” said Szafnauer, in statements collected by the American website Motorsport. com.

“It seems that the amount of virus in his body is decreasing significantly from test to test. I think that by the time we get to Barcelona he will be back in the car. But this is like trying to guess the future.”

“If that doesn’t happen, don’t crucify me because I can’t predict the future. But just looking at the rate of virus that is leaving his body, if it’s linear, it should be fine by the time we go to Barcelona,” he added.

On the other hand, the boss of the ‘rosa’ team has confirmed that, in the event that Pérez tests positive again, Hülkenberg will get on the RP20 again. “If Pérez can’t be in the car, Nico would be,” said Otmar to conclude.

In addition, Nico Hülkenberg himself has revealed that he will travel to Barcelona this week just in case and his participation in the Spanish GP will depend on Sergio Pérez’s state of health.
