LONDON (AP) – Britain’s Prince Charles went to a London hospital on Saturday to visit his father, Prince Philip, who was admitted earlier in the week for “observation and rest” after falling ill.
Carlos arrived at King Edward VII Private Hospital in the afternoon and stayed for half an hour. The hospital page says visits are only allowed in “exceptional circumstances” due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Felipe, 99, was admitted Tuesday as a “precautionary measure” on the advice of a doctor after experiencing unspecified discomfort.
Queen Elizabeth II’s husband is expected to remain in the hospital until next week.
His illness is not believed to be related to COVID-19. The queen and Felipe received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine in early January.
Felipe retired from public engagements in 2017 and is rarely seen outside of his closest environment. His most recent public event was a military ceremony at Buckingham Palace in July.
During the current confinement by the coronavirus in England, the so-called Duke of Edinburgh has remained in Windsor Castle, west of London, with the 94-year-old queen, who has held events such as teleconference meetings with dignitaries.
The royal household plans celebrations for Felipe’s 100th birthday on June 10, if confinement restrictions allow.
Felipe married the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947 and is the longest-lived royal consort in British history. He and the queen have four children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
