Nvidia Introduces New Line of GPUs Exclusive to Ethereum Mining

For years, gamers and miners of cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin or ether, on the Ethereum network, have shown rivalry for the demand for graphics cards or GPUs. The former seek better images for their video games, while the latter go for the incentives offered by the networks for the transfer of value.

This confrontation could be coming to an end after Nvidia, one of the world’s largest GPU makers, announced a New exclusive product line for professional cryptocurrency mining (CMP). The company revealed this Thursday, February 18, that between the first quarter and the second quarter of 2021, four models will be available for Ethereum (ETH) mining enthusiasts.

The Nvidia CMP 30HX, 40HX, 50HX and 90HX cards have a hash rate capacity that ranges between 26 and 86 MH / s, as reported by the manufacturer through a statement posted on its website. On the technical specifications it was reported:

CMP products, which do not make graphics, (…) are optimized for the best performance and efficiency in mining. They do not meet the specifications required of a GeForce GPU and therefore do not affect the availability of GeForce GPUs to gamers.

According to Nvidia, CMP have no graphics support (no video outputs), allowing improved airflow during mining so that they “can be more densely packed”, that is, stacked together, for example. In addition, they operate with lower frequencies and voltages.

The idea of the manufacturer is to serve the needs of both markets without a shortage of devices of this type, something that has happened intermittently in the past. The situation has also generated an increase in card prices and new rivalries between the two sectors.

Minimize the hash rate of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060

Nvidia’s strategy points to two fronts: enabling the new exclusive chips for Ethereum miners and restricting the hash rate of GeForce RTX 3060 GPUs, in case they are used to mine cryptocurrencies. The latter team will be released on February 25, but with limitations on its processing power so that it is not “palatable” to miners. On how it will work, Nvidia explained:

“The RTX 3060 software drivers are designed to detect specific attributes of the Ethereum mining algorithm and limit its hash rate or mining efficiency by approximately 50 percent.” In other words, the GPU would not be a suitable product for mining, but it would be adjusted to the needs of the gamers.

Nvidia defended its decision by saying that the GeForce RTX introduces cutting-edge technologies “tailored to meet the needs of gamers and digital experience creators.” For mining enthusiasts the way to go would be the CMP models.

It is unknown what the prices of the four models of the CMP 30HX, 40HX, 50HX and 90HX will be. As for the GeForce RTX 3060 GPU, it would be sold on the market for around 330 euros.

Although Nvidia is currently creating new business models with specialized teams for cryptocurrency mining, in the past the company has moved away from manufacturing graphics cards for mining crypto assets. CriptoNoticias reported in August 2018 that the company did not had met your income expectations after venturing into this market.
