London. Russian Daniil Medvedev qualified for the semi-finals of the Masters in London by beating Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic 6-3, on the second day of the Tokyo 1970 group.
This result also has the effect of mathematically eliminating Diego Schwartzman, ninth in the ATP classification, who a few hours earlier had registered his second defeat in two games when he fell 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3 against German Alexander Zverev.
The Argentine player needed Djokovic’s victory over Medvedev in order to reach the third day with options, something that did not happen.
Djokovic, a five-time London Masters champion who started the tournament on Monday with an easy straight-set win over Schwartzman, needs to beat Zverev on Matchday 3 on Friday to reach the semi-finals.
Diego Schwartzman, eliminated
Medvedev, fourth in the world and recent champion in the Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy, had beaten Zverev on the first day and is confirmed for now as the great rival to beat in the tournament, after ensuring by fast track qualify as leader of your group.
“I always like to play against Novak, one of the greatest champions in our sport. When I was a child I saw him win his first Grand Slam titles and for me it is a dream come true when I face him, ”said the 24-year-old Russian after the match, in which he taught his idol a real lesson.
I am very happy to have defeated him. I served and played well on the important points. I think he didn’t have his best tennis today, but even beating him on one of his bad days is difficult, he said.
In the deciding set, Medvedev only conceded a breaking ball to the Serbian and was also able to save it. Djokovic saw his rival break his serve three times, leaving him with no option to fight for victory.
Djokovic cannot classify as the leader of his group, nor can Rafael Nadal in his group after losing on Tuesday to Dominic Thiem, so even if they both manage to qualify, there will be no match between the top two in the ranking in the semifinals and the eventual duel would have to wait for the end.
