Upgrade: Nintendo has sent an email to the press detailing the announcements contained in today’s Nintendo Direct, including the following details about Splatoon 3:
In this new game in the Splatoon series, you will leave Inkopolis behind and head to a new region: the Splatlands. Its heart is a new city where battle-savvy Inklings and Octolings gather: Splatsville, also known as the « City of Chaos. » Splatoon 3 introduces several features to the action-shooter series, including weapons like the bow, customization options, and movement abilities that will add to the 4v4 battles of Turf Wars. More information about the full sequel coming to Nintendo Switch in 2022 will be revealed in the future.
Original story: A desert. There, in a sea of sand, the remains of a lost civilization decompose in the scorching midday air. And then something stirs. Something alive. Something that moves.

Nintendo launches new miniature NES with 30 commemorative games
The opening moments of Nintendo’s latest reveal trailer for today’s Nintendo Direct seemed to hint at some kind of new open-world post-apocalyptic game based on the Splatoon series. However, we’ve gotten the full reveal below: Splatoon 3.
(By the way, before I go any further, may I point out that all Splatoon games are « post-apocalyptic » – at least if you really pay attention to the lore of the games.)
Regardless, Splatoon 3 is indeed on its way, which shouldn’t be a huge surprise. If Nintendo wants to get the game out early enough for it to have a proper life before the Switch is potentially replaced, now is the time to do so. Or, should I say, 2022 is, since that’s when the game is going to arrive.
We don’t have many important details about the game, but we do have some smaller ones. A look at what appears to be the new downtown. A quick look at what appears to be a revised spawn system, and a few glimpses of the new weapons. A robot crab. Signs that perhaps the world has lost its water. And a mysterious audio at the end.
