Nintendo explains why it canceled The Big House, a Smash Bros. tournament

Fans of the franchise are upset and made a campaign on social networks to demand more support from Nintendo and an explanation for the cancellation of the competition. The company listened to its followers and clarified the situation in a statement.

Polygon contacted Nintendo to get more information on this. The company took the opportunity to thank the community for all their “love and dedication” to the franchise.

He also made it clear that over the months he has organized several Super Smash Bros. tournaments, both online and offline. Nintendo stated that it will continue to support the competitions of the various games in the series.

However, Nintendo declared that The Big House did not comply with its rules, so it had to cancel the event. The reason? The company explained that indeed it was all due to mods and the illegal use of copies of their games.

“Unfortunately, the upcoming Big House tournament announced plans to host an online tournament for Super Smash Bros. Melee, which requires the use of illegally copied versions of the game along with a mod called Slippi,” the company stated.

Nintendo clarified that it first contacted the event organizers to request that it not take place. However, there was no response, so the company was forced to send out a cease and desist notice.

“They refused, leaving Nintendo no choice but to intervene to protect their intellectual property and brands. Nintendo cannot condone or allow piracy of its intellectual property, ”the company concluded.
