Paramount Pictures has confirmed that the new, restored and modified version of The Godfather Part III will hit theaters in Mexico during the first days of December and will also be on sale in digital format through multiple platforms. The new conclusion called Mario Puzo’s Godfather, Epilogue: The Death of Michael Corleone, is an effort by director Francis Ford Coppola to share with the public his true intention to conclude the epic history of the mafia.
“It is an acknowledgment of Mario’s and my favorite title and our original intentions for what became ‘The Godfather: Part III,'” Coppola said in a joint statement with Paramount. “For this version of the ending, I created a new beginning and ending, and rearranged some scenes, takes, and music tracks. With these changes and the images and sound restored, for me it is a more appropriate conclusion to ‘The Godfather’ and ‘The Godfather: Part II’ and I am grateful to Jim Gianopulos and Paramount for allowing me to review it. “
For months it was reported that Coppola was working on the restoration of the third chapter of the trilogy, but not only that, but that he would use the editing to alter the story and give it a totally different ending. Both filmmaker and producer American Zoetrope took on joint efforts from restore the original negative through a 4K scanner where both the original version and the new one that is the result of a new montage were meticulously reviewed frame by frame.
The process lasted just over six months in which more than 50 original shots were searched to replace those that had lower resolution in the original. The restoration team worked in detail to fix scratches, stains and other flaws that could not be corrected 30 years ago due to the limitations of technology. In addition, a new sound mix with improvements and a new distribution in five channels.
The titanic project was interrupted in the middle of the process by the pandemic and therefore completed remotely with greater organizational and technical efforts, in the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The vice president of the Paramount Archives mentioned that Coppola supervised every minute detail of the restoration while working on his new edition. Thus the filmmaker ensured that “the film not only looks and sounds pristine, but also meets his personal standards and his vision as a director,” he concluded.
