NetherRealm is mostly known for Mortal Kombat installments, but within its famous IP portfolio is Injustice as well. The studio has been fully dedicated to these sagas and many wonder if it will soon launch a project outside these franchises.

During a recent interview with Geoff Keighley, Ed Boon, Creative Director at NetherRealm, discussed the future of Mortal Kombat, its popularity, and what awaits the studio in the years to come.

Ed Boon hinted at new projects by NetherRealm

Keighley claimed to be admired for the work NetherRealm has done with his various series, most notably with Mortal Kombat. Also, producer The Game Awards noted that it was apparent that Boon was still having fun doing the franchise.

Upon this, Boon replied that Mortal Kombat has become basic for him and the study. He assured that the saga is partly like the Marvel movies, as its iterations will continue to arrive.

The interesting thing is that Boon said that they have had the opportunity to work on other projects, such as Injustice, and hinted that there are other things on the way now. “We have other things in the oven, but it’s always nice to do Mortal Kombat games,” Boon said.

The creative was surprised by the support that players have given Mortal Kombat for years, because he did not think that the popularity of the saga would be in force for so long.

“If you had told me that this would be our fastest-selling Mortal Kombat game so far, 20 years later, I wouldn’t have believed it. The fact that they are doing it as well as always is great ”, concluded the creative.

For now, the studio’s upcoming projects are a mystery. Of course, a new installment of Injustice is not ruled out, but there is also the possibility that NetherRealm will surprise us with something new.
